Nestor Sulpico came home last January with no welcome bands or a parangal. Not even his fellow passengers or any airport officials knew about him. It was about in 2004 that he made American headlines by being New York’s Most Honest Taxi Driver, when he returned $75,000 worth of black pearls a passenger left behind at the backseat of his taxi. Sa kasamaang palad siya ay pumanaw na sa edad na 51 at ang kanyang labi ay inihatid sa kanyang bayan sa Jaro, Iloilo dahilan umano sa colon cancer.
There must be something good to the saying that the good die young and the bad seeds shrivel away. There maybe justice in there too, in evil men and women being punished by having to endure their miserable, if quite vicious, selves for what seems like an eternity. What a wealth of meaning that simple sentence suggests. At the very least it does your parents proud. when you say I was raised to be honest when most of us can say the opposite, since no can say it, I was raised to being a crook, which spits on your your parents graves.
At the very most, it also suggests a breadth of imagination that I have always thought that contrary to rumor, people who were raised to be honest do not lack imagination, instead they posses it abundantly. Marami po at hindi lang kaunti. The charge that honest people lack imagination comes from the notion that they cannot visualize the improvements in life if sana itinago na lang nila ang napulot na kayamanan. Tanga at Gago ang sasabihin ng mga tao. Honesty is not a virtue of the heart, it is a virtue of the head and those people are tough minded.
Ang di ko po maintindihan is bakit di man lang naparangalan ito ng ating pamahalaan. The government, Senate or Congress didn’t even give him a citation for his service to his country. Ano ang serbisyo na nagawa niya sa bayan ? Well, He is just one of the very few who has rescued the Philippines from its unsavory reputation as the Ladrones Island or Island of Thieves. But his deeds are living memoriam that helps us remind that not all Filipinos are crooks which is the impression we have in the international arena. Eto pa, in the Philippine Senate there is a lot of investigation about crooks and like the many leeches attaching themselves to mouthwatering government contracts.
Not all of us are crooks, and theres a few who are never contented with the ill gotten wealth they have saved. The best saying and teacher of all is that when you set a bad example, you’ll have a contagion. You set a good example, you’ll have an explosion of good deeds. You cheat in elections, you have graduate nurses cheating in exams. You return money someone left in your cab, you’ll have a chain of events.
Sulpico’s deed, I hope will start an epidemic for our country. I hate to see the players of the NBN-ZTE scandal deal get away with cheating. I can only hope that by honoring Nestor Sulpico will always remind us of precious things we’ve lost in our country that left us poor and dispossessed. The crooks in our country in the government level have led us to lost our pride and honor and the small of us suffers to bring it back alive. We the unknown citizens of the Philippines suffers the consequence that these ladrones in the government initiate. Ang di ko lang maintindihan ay kung bakit maraming magnanakaw sa ating gobyerno ang napaparangalan pa at itong si Nestor Sulpico ay hindi man lang mabanggit ang pangalan sa kanyang munting nagawang kabutihan sa bayan. Nakahiya at mga taga ibang bansa pa na tulad ng New York government ang magbigay ng karangalan at mismong si Oprah Winfrey din. Ako po ay hihinga na lamang ng malalim.
