Wow Naman !!!
In 2002, Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) president and general manager Winston Garcia was involved in the infamous and whooping P53, 501,698.34 purchase of artworks of famous Filipino artists. Using excess liquidity funds, binili ng GSIS thru Gracia’s initiative ang “Parisian Life” painting ni Juan Luna at ang “Under the Mango Tree” and “Ricefields’ painting ni Fernando Amorsolo.
Once again, si Winston Garcia ay laman na naman ng mg newspapers because of his bid to take over the management of Meralco. Could this squabble be politically motivated? Is Garcia acting as the government’s pawn ? Could history be repeating itself?
Naalala nyo be during the Marcos regime ? Naagaw din ng mga Marcoses and Meralco. Along with other assets, Meralco was surrendered to the political adversary of the Lopezes. Is there a hidden agenda behind all these furors ? Garcia is doing the same tactics he has done in the now defunct Equitable-PCI Bank. The same as what he is doing with Meralco, Garcia together with other PCI board members have harped on the questionable transactions that leans toward benefitting other Go-controlled businesses.
The Lopezes and GSIS both have about one third each of Meralco’s total shares. About 36% is held by public investors. Garcia’s abrasive personality surfaced when he started to sit on the board. He demands transparency. Veco is the second largest power distributor in the country. This is not far from the truth as the same thing has been done before, and it certainly will be done over and over again to feed the struggle for power.
Garcia is blaming the Lopezes for the exorbitant electric rates. This fact however, was disputed by the former Senate president Jovito Salonga. Salonga stated that the Lopez family is known for their concern for the public by investing in public service companies such as telecommunication, broadcasting, power and many other businesses that benefited the Filipino people. Meralco is a heavily regulated business.
Further, Salonga stated that a big portion of the earnings of the Lopez businesses is given back to the society in the form of education, culture and arts. The Lopezes thru their charitable programs are always on the frontline every time disaster strikes.
